10 Tips to Eco Friendly
Saving the planet is no easy task, and looking great while doing it is even harder. So here are 10 tips to make your daily routine more eco friendly without sacrificing your style.
1. Recycle empty product bottles. I am not just talking about taking them to the recycle bin, use them for other things. My kids love to use old shampoo bottles for playing house. You can also use old spray bottles to spritz your plants or yourself when it’s hot out.
2. Purchase products that are refillable. Many makeup lines are jumping on the eco band wagon. You purchase a refillable palette to keep your eye shadows and blushers in and the given brand sells the refills for a fraction of those that come in their own container. Bulk products are another great way to cut down on the packaging.
3. Adjust the shower temperature. I am by no means telling you to take a cold shower but I will tell you rinsing your hair in cool water does add shine and decreases frizz. If everyone decreases their shower time by one minute we can save a whole lot of energy and in turn the planet.
4. Wash your hair every other day. Not only does this cut down on your shower time, it is actually better for your hair. Most hairdressers agree, hair only needs to be washed twice a week. I wash mine every other day and finish with a cool water rinse. I actually think my second day hair looks better than right after I wash. This also cuts down on the amount of pollution you personally contribute to the planet.
5. Use the rule of three when buying new things. If you can’t think of three ways to use or wear something don’t buy it. No, your closet won’t be packed to the gills, but what you do buy will be special and cherished for the long haul.
6. Limit your dry cleaning. Dry cleaning uses a lot of chemicals and you even pay an environmental impact tax in most states. By washing and ironing your clothing, they will last longer and you will be helping your wallet too. I do my ironing while watching TV. It’s more productive than eating potato chips.
7. Do your make-up outside. No more mistakes or mismatched foundations. Save energy by doing make-up in natural light.
8. Don’t use aerosol hair sprays. Not only are these incredibly outdated, they don’t spread evenly. Use a pump spray. Look, the truth is if your hair requires that much hold you need a new hairdresser, not a new hairspray.
9. Wash clothing in cool water with as little detergent as possible. This helps the planet, and it also adds to the longevity of your clothes. You can also reduce your carbon footprint by hanging delicates up to dry and not using your dryer.
10. Buy Organic when ever possible. I am not saying throw out everything in your closet. I am saying choose to replace things with organic products when you have the need.
If we each take a few little steps toward helping the planet, the impact is amazing.
